Brady Singer was a sandwich-round pick in 2015, but did not agree to terms with the Toronto Blue Jays, so he ended up at the University of Florida. There, he had a breakout freshman year that established him as a likely first-round pick for 2018.

I saw Singer pitch last season at Vanderbilt, and his velocity was sitting 90-91 mph with the same high-effort arm action and low slot that he showed as a freshman. He was effective against right-handed batters but struggled against lefties and generally lacked command of his fastball. He threw on Friday night for the Gators at the University of Miami, and while he touched 95 mph early, it was more of the same for the right-hander.
Tuesday's three-team, five-player trade (with two more players to be named later) was apparently several weeks in the making, and sees two 2017 playoff teams improving themselves for this season, while the Tampa Bay Rays continue to deal veteran players who don't project to be around when their next young core is ready to contend.
The market for J.D. Martinez appeared Dalvin Tomlinson Authentic Jersey to comprise just one team -- the Boston Red Sox, who had the means, motive and opportunity to sign the outfielder/DH whom no other team seemed to come close to in terms of offers. That may have contributed to the lengthy stalemate. I think the Red Sox blinked, giving Martinez a five-year, $110 million deal that is certainly too long (the deal includes an opt-out after two years), but does improve their offense in a way no other free agent this year could have, and directly boosts their chances of repeating as division champs.
In the short term, Martinez is exactly what the Red Sox need: a power hitter to insert into a lineup that hit the fewest homers of any American League team last year -- 168, 18 home runs behind the next lowest total. The Red Sox were fifth in the AL in OBP last year, helping them to a sixth-place finish in runs scored despite the lack of home run power, but with even average home run totals they likely would have Arrelious Benn Jersey finished in the top three.
The San Diego Padres' decision to sign Eric Hosmer to an eight-year deal -- really a five-year deal for $105 million with a three-year player option for another $39 million at the end -- is the most inexplicable move of the offseason. Not only does it overvalue Hosmer's production, it adds a player who doesn't fit the Padres' current or long-term needs, and bumps one of their better players to a position where he's going to be a problem defensively.
Hosmer's major league career has never lived up to the expectations everyone, myself included, had for him when he was a prospect. He was No. 3 on my draft board in 2008, and rose as high as No. 3 in my offseason prospect rankings before he made his major league debut in 2011. He was a two-way player in high school, throwing up to 94 mph off the mound, while also providing big power and a very good idea at the plate, athletic enough that he might be able to move to right field, with 30-homer potential that would let him profile at any position.
The NCAA Division I schedule kicks off this Friday, Feb. 16, which marks the unofficial start of MLB draft season as well, although some high schools and junior colleges in the south and west are already underway. This year's Rule 4 draft will take place June 4-6, with the Detroit Tigers holding the first pick, followed by the Giants, Phillies, White Sox and Reds. The class looks strong right now, the deepest overall since 2011, although the upper tier is less certain right now and heavier on the high school talent some teams have shied away from in recent drafts.
The Chicago Cubs struck early this winter with a quick signing of Tyler Chatwood, a starter who has never qualified for the ERA title in his career. They signed him to a three-year, $38 million deal, reflecting at least in part the importance that Statcast data plays in teams' decisions on which players to acquire and at what cost.
Chatwood was the clear No. 4 starter in their rotation, with Jose Quintana their No. 1, followed by Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks in either order, and a cast of several potential starters for the final spot. Rather than adding another back-end starter, the Cubs decided to take advantage of the soft market for top-end free agents by signing the best player still available, Yu Darvish, at what appears to be a bargain salary on a deal that's a year or two too long. The Marlins did a good trade! They got three legitimate prospects back for Christian Yelich, and the fourth isn't nothing, which makes this the best trade they've made in this cash-grab offseason.
Lewis Brinson, the No. 32 prospect in baseball for 2018, is a plus-plus defender in center with great bat speed and big raw power, with staying healthy his main problem so far in pro ball. He should be able to step in immediately to play center in Miami, which would also allow the Marlins to send Magneuris Sierra to the minors to continue developing as a hitter. Brinson's swing can get long, and he's going to strike out at a fairly high rate, but the ball comes off his bat extremely well and I think he'll more than make up for the whiffs with extra-base power.
